The ESOLIO (English for Speakers of Other Languages International Olympiad) is designed to provide a platform for students worldwide to showcase their English language proficiency, encouraging excellence in communication skills among non-native English speakers.

ESOLIO 2025

The English for Speakers of Other Languages International Olympiad (ESOLIO) is an annual global competition designed to promote excellence in English language proficiency among non-native speakers. The 2025 edition will be held in Bali, Indonesia, from 29 June- 3 July, bringing together talented students from around the world to compete in a series of challenges that test their listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills.

(Grades 4-6): CEFR Levels A2-B1 *Students in grade 1-3 are welcome

Junior High Schools

(Grades 7-9): CEFR Levels B1-B2

(Grades 10-12): CEFR Levels B2-C1

Participants

  • Elementary (Grades 4-6), middle (7-9), and high school (10-12) students.
  • Elementary school students in grades 1-3 are welcomed to participate.
    Students who :
    – Attend international schools (using International Cambridge/IB/other international curriculum), and/or
    – Use English as a the learning medium, and/or
    – Had lived in English-speaking countries* for 3 years or more, in the last 5 years
    (later will be referred to as special category) can also participate.
    – Native speakers (one or both parents are from an English-speaking country*) are not permitted to participate.(The United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.)

Each country can send a minimum of 2 participants and a maximum of 10 participants for each level. The Host Country can send a maximum of 15 participants for each level.

National Selection (The National Selection phase is divided into two rounds)

Preliminary Round:

Objective

To identify the best participants at the national level.

Content

Participants will tackle multiple-choice and short answers questions. Participants will have 60-75 minutes to complete the test. Esolio Country Partner will inform you of Platform of the test. The problem sets are designed according to CEFR levels, ensuring that the difficulty is appropriate for each age group. The results for Preliminary Round to be issued approximately within a month of the test.

National Round:

Objective

To determine the top national representatives who will advance to the international competition.

Format

Offline Paper-Based Testing (PBT)

Content

A comprehensive assessment covering listening, reading, and writing. All problem sets will be aligned with the appropriate CEFR levels.

International Round

Objective

To crown the best non-native English speakers internationally.

Format

Participants will compete in:

Writing: Crafting essays or reports based on prompts.

Listening: Comprehension exercises based on spoken English.

Reading: Analysis and comprehension of written texts.

Speaking: A 5-minute speech based on given topics, evaluating fluency, coherence, and language use.

All content will be developed according to the CEFR levels suitable for each participant group, ensuring a fair and challenging competition.

ESOLIO (English for Speakers of Other Languages International Olympiad) is an international English language competition organized by Abak Academy. Its aim is to support and encourage individuals from non-English speaking countries to develop their English skills and measure their proficiency against international standards.

Registration for the Preliminary Round is open from September 12 to October 31, 2024.

For Indonesia, registration fees are:

  • IDR 100,000 (individual registration)
  • IDR 90,000 (collective registration with a minimum of 20 participants)
  • Registration can be done via bit.ly/regesolio2024
  • Preliminary Round:

IDR 100,000 (individual) | IDR 90,000 (collective with minimum of 20 students)

  • National and International Rounds fees will be further informed through the participant group. All fees are borne by the participants.

If a participant who qualifies for the National Round does not confirm their participation, their spot will be filled by the next highest-ranking participant who did not initially qualify. This means that the participant with the highest score below the last qualifying participant will be given the opportunity to proceed to the National Round.
In case of a tie in scores, the committee will choose the higher ranking based on the time taken during the preliminary test, with less time being better.

2024 is the first year of ESOLIO, thus there are no actual past papers for participants to study. However, Participants can study according to the CEFR level relevant to their competition category on any medium.

Results for the Preliminary Round are typically announced a few weeks after the test. National and International Round results are announced following the completion of each respective round. Winners will be notified directly and results will also be published on the official ESOLIO website.

No, participants must compete in the category corresponding to their grade and CEFR level. They cannot register for multiple categories or levels within the same competition year.

Participants who pass to the National Round will be responsible for covering their own costs associated with the National Round.
